History English Landscape Garden.. Gardening in Modern Peri..
English GardensThe formal English Garden is surrounded by a yew hedge; the dark green velvet-textured foliage contrasts with the flower colors of deep reds, purples and oranges in the west border to pastel pinks, blues and yellows in the east border. White flower color accents meld both borders with the Victorian-style pavilion at the north end. The elegant, cream-colored pavilion is accented by a traditionally laid blue stone floor and walk that surrounds a large lawn for wedding ceremonies.

Although England borrowed many ideas about gardens from other countries, the English garden has become something unusual and is remarkably beautiful. Among the large and famous ones are those at Chatsworth in Derbyshire, where there are water gardens; Hatfield House in Hertfordshire; Hampton Court near London, with Tudor gardens and a maze;and Compton Wynyates in Warwickshire, with fine examples of topiary - which is the art of cutting trees or shrubs into ornamental shapes. At Bodnant in Wales and Culzean Castle in Scotland the gardens are specially designed so that the River Conway in one case and the Ayrshire hills in the other form a background. The royal parks at Greenwich, St. James Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens are also good examples of garden designs.
