| | Hindu Marriage in Modern Age
| |
| |
From the description given above it is seen that the forms of Hindu marriage whether recognized by the Dhramashastras or by the consent of the father cover every mode of matrimonial union between a man and a woman. Social prejudices against the women were so firmly established that she had hardly any opportunity, freedom or chances of development and self expression. Therefore reforms were essential. The job was undertaken by Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772-1833) Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (1820-1898) Justice Ranade and others who started movements to put an end to some of the inhuman practices. As a result some evil practices were stopped through the passage of certain Acts. All Indian Women?s Converence also contributed to these reforms .
Slowly and gradually they acquired more and more rights and came at the level of equality with men. Rigidity of Shastric rites liberalized and the ceremonies became simpler, although symbolic rites are still in vogue. Now the girl has much to say in the selection of the boy in the marriages. All ceremonies have been simplified. However, there is much to be done especially for the womenfolk of the villages where old prejudices and customs still hold good and are deeply rooted in family life
