Henna or as more commonly called as Mehendi is considered to be an ancient Indian body art. In fact, the art of applying henna on the palms is called Mehendi, it is an ancient ritual and art form No Indian wedding is ever complete without the mehendi ceremony. Henna has long since played a very significant role in adorning the Indian bride. Its easy to apply, has a lot of freedom of design since its upto the individual who applies and also the bride to have the designs conceive or copy and ofcourse it looks lovely. Various kinds of designs can be made depending on the occasion. In wedding ceremonies mostly traditional Indian designs are made on the hands of the bride. These traditional designs are elaborate and detail. It`s not only the bride who is adorned with the henna or mehendi application but also the groom and the wedding party of both the sides who apply mehendi. The ritual of mehendi is followed in every part of the country where the hands of the bride are adorned with the lovely red hue of the mehendi. In fact, applying henna or mehendi is a part of the wedding rituals and one whole day, rather night is devoted for this function. At the time of mehendi or henna application there are special songs to be sung in Indian folklore. In many Indian cultures, it`s a custom also to exchange the used mehendi between bride and the groom to apply. Today, henna designs can be used as armlets, bracelets, anklets, and general designs on hands and feet, brides also opt for Arabic designs, ornamental designs and tattoo designs like necklace tattoos, navel tattoos and anklet tattoos.
