Early Preparation
The following lists will help you get ready for a hospital birth. In case you are planning for a home birth, many items from this list will be relevant. Ask your doctor or midwife for the things to arrange at home, and the preparations to make beforehand.
1. Write a Birth Plan and go over it with doctor or midwife.
2. Tour the hospital.
3. Pre - register at the hospital.
Pack Your Bags for the Hospital; For Use during Labor
Pack these in a separate bag from your suitcase, which may not be handy during labor:
Chapstick or lip gloss; toothbrush
Small paper bag (for use if hyperventilation occurs)
Tennis balls, rolling pins, campers` ice for pressure on back
Warm socks in case your feet get cold
Cornstarch or powder in shaker for effleurage and back rub
A watch with second hand to time contractions
Favorite juice, tea, honey, or popsicles if not provided
Partner`s snack (if hospital does not provide food in the labor room)
Partner`s swimsuit (so partner can accompany you in the shower)
Phone numbers of people to call after the birth (money if needed)
Camera, film, tape recorder
Personalized focal point (a picture, design, or figure)
Tapes of relaxing music
For Postpartum Stay
Nightgowns or pajamas for nursing; may prefer hospital Gowns
Robe and slippers
Usual cosmetic and grooming aids
Shower cap
Nursing bras (2)
Reading and writing materials
Money for newspaper, etc.
Going-home clothes (a comfortable size, as you probably will not be back to your prepregnant size yet)
Other personal items For the Baby
Diapers (2) and diaper pins (hospital may put a disposable diaper on baby)
Undershirt. Nightgown or stretch suit
Waterproof pad or pants
Receiving blanket
Outside blanket, bunting, booties, and cap
Dynamically tested car seat to be used for the ride home
