Your physician will perform the following tests on you at your first or second prenatal visit:
1. A complete medical history and physical examination
2. A pelvic (vaginal) examination
To confirm your pregnancy
To estimate the size and shape of the pelvis
To do a Pap smear to detect cervical cancer
To test for gonorrhea
3. Blood tests
To determine the blood type, Rh factor
To test for anemia
To test for infection
To test for syphilis
To test for German measles immunity
To confirm your pregnancy
4. Urine tests
To check for protein, sugar, etc. (urinalysis)
To check for infection
To confirm your pregnancy
In the initial stage of pregnancy, prenatal care visits to the doctor is usually once a month, provided there is no complication, progressing to once in every two weeks. During the final stages of pregnancy, a weekly visit is necessary. At each visit, the doctor assesses the health of the mother and the developing baby. The checks carried out at each visit include
1. A weight check
2. A blood pressure test
To detect high blood pressure (hypertension or preeclamp-sia)
3 Urine tests
To detect excess protein, which may indicate preeclampsia
To detect high sugar levels, which may indicate diabetes
4. Abdominal examinations
To measure the growth of the uterus (fundal height), which indicates the growth of the fetus and the length of the pregnancy.
To estimate the size and position of the fetus through Leopold`s maneuvers
During your prenatal visits, you will also discuss your doubts and concerns and the progress of your pregnancy with your doctor and get his recommendations on nutrition, exercise, employment.
