Pregnancy
PreganancyIt is said that motherhood makes a woman complete. Be she a career woman at one end of the spectrum or the housewife at the other end, one day she will dream of becoming a mother and starting a family. Mother Nature prepares every woman for conceiving, delivering and rearing a child.

Human pregnancy refers to the process by which a human female carries a live offspring from conception until childbirth. Human pregnancy lasts approximately 9 months between the time of the last menstrual cycle and childbirth (38 weeks from fertilization). The medical term for a pregnant woman is genetalian, just as the medical term for the potential baby is embryo (early weeks) and then fetus (until birth). A woman who is pregnant for the first time is known as a primigravida or gravida 1: a woman who has never been pregnant is known as a gravida 0; similarly, the terms para 0, para 1 and so on are used for the number of times a woman has given birth.

In many societies` medical and legal definitions, human pregnancy is somewhat arbitrarily divided into three trimester periods, as a means to simplify reference to the different stages of fetal development. The first trimester period carries the highest risk of miscarriage (natural death of embryo or fetus). During the second trimester the development of the fetus can be monitored and diagnosed. The third trimester marks the beginning of viability, which means the fetus might survive if an early birth occurs.

During pregnancy the fetus or the fertilized egg gets embedded to the lining of the uterus and it makes its home there for the next nine months. It is the state where the unborn baby becomes capable of life outside the safe and protective environment of the mother`s body. These nine months allows the parents-to-be an opportunity to learn, adjust and prepare for parenthood. For most people, becoming parents is a unique change that they will experience in their lives. The nurturing of a child physically, emotionally and spiritually is a heavy responsibility and a delightful opportunity.

The birth of a baby in the family is a joyous event with long lasting significance. Although there are many ways to have a baby and many choices which can be made throughout the childbearing period, the ultimate goal of a successful pregnancy is to have a healthy mother and child. It must be a positive growth experience for parents-to-be.

This is the time to draw on or develop the characteristics they believe will help then in fulfilling their new roles as parents.

First and foremost, the parents-to-be need to understand the Reproductive Anatomy of male and female, the process of being pregnant and the signs and symptoms of pregnancy.

Pre-Natal Care assures the birth of a healthy baby and involves regular visits to the doctor.

During pregnancy, the baby gets all the nutrients from the mother`s body. As the fetus grows, so does its life support system to meet the increasing needs of the fetus. The mother`s body also prepares itself for the delivery and breast feeding during the post-natal period. Nutrition And Health of the mother ensures a healthy growth of the fetus and a uncomplicated birth.

As pregnancy progresses, the body gains weight and changes shape. A good posture and a safe way of carrying out everyday tasks will assist in going through a very comfortable pregnancy period. Exercises and Comforts assist in posture maintenance and movements with everyday exercises.

The father-to-be may like to get involved in Preparing for Childbirth. The parents-to-be can go through the daily practice of relaxation techniques, patterned breathing and comfort measures.

After conception, the fetus within the body is nurtured for about 265 days or 280 days (40 weeks) from the first day of the last menstrual period. Labor and Birth is the climax of pregnancy, when many seeming-ly unrelated systems work together to bring about birth. During labor, the uterus contracts, the cervix thins (ef-faces) and opens (dilates), and the mother gives birth to the baby, placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic sac. The entire process may last for a few hours or a couple of days.

Childbirth is a miracle which a woman has the honor to perform with help from Mother Nature. Complications and aberrations may mar this natural process and one has to be wary that no complication develops during labor. Complications of labor and corrective actions including alternative forms of delivery are described in detail under Complications and Medications.

Baby Care involves getting to know the newborn and how to take care of him/her.

The baby needs to be protected from potentially serious illnesses through immunization. Most of the immunizations are applied in the baby`s first year and the follow ups are applied through a regular schedule. Immunizations are given at the doctor`s chamber or, for a token fee, at public health clinics.

The information here will help to bring forth in this beautiful world a healthy, happy baby and make the parents confidently look forward to the task of looking after him/her.
