The Five senses of the Newborn
In the past, babycare specialists believed that new babies were not receptive of sight and sound. It was also assumed that they could not distinguish colors, and that their ears are full of mucus and fluid which impaired their hearing. A wet diaper, hunger, or colic would only elicit response like crying from newborn babies. It was believed that babies should not be picked up every time they cried. Years of study proved the above assumptions wrong.

EyesightEyesight:An alert baby can focus on objects seven to eighteen inches away. He develops his preferences to view objects. Human faces, complex patterns, and slowly moving objects -particularly shiny objects with sharply contrasting colors are his favorite. He will be able to trace, a slowly moving object in a 180 degree arc above his head, obviously if the object interests him. He will stare at you until he is tired of you and turn his attention away. This way, your baby exercises control over what he wants to view.

HearingHearing:Hearing develops in the fetal stage. A newborn baby reacts to sounds. They re-spond to human voices especially high pitched voices of female. People often raise the pitch of their voices unconsciously to attract their attention, while trying to converse with them. Familiar voices or sounds either stir your baby or calm him down. He relates to his mother because he is acquainted with the mothers voice, and other internal and external noises when he was inside his mother. Repetitious, droning sounds (such as a dishwasher, a washing machine, or certain music) is also identified by the newborn. Sudden, loud noises may startle him.

SmellSmell:The sense of smell is strong for the baby. He can differentiate between various smells and can even tell the difference in smell between her own mother`s milk and another mother`s milk.

Taste: Babies are responsive to sweet, sour, salty, and bitter tastes, they normally prefer sweet substances.

Touch:Your baby enjoys being held tight to your body, stroked, rocked, caressed and gently jiggled. He also likes comfort and warmth and an ambient environment. He enjoys swaddling up to a certain time and then wants to be left alone, when older.
