Crying of Babies
CryingNewborns spend a lot of time crying, other than eating or sleeping. It is frustrating for new parents to find their baby crying, especially when they cannot discern the reasons. Crying is a natural reaction. Do not loose your cool, try to reason out the possible causes. Move slowly and calmly around a crying infant.

Rule out each parameter as possible causes for crying. Your baby may cry if he is hungry. An overdressed, underdressed, sick, or bored baby may also cry. A diaper rash or colic or even exhaustion may bring tears in your baby`s eyes. He may need cuddling or attention. He may simply need to be put to bed and allowed to cry awhile to settle herself. He may cry continuously for five to fifteen minutes for no reason. You can comfort him by stroking his bottom or back, sometimes gentle rocking does the trick.

Generally, the infants have a finicky time every day. Unfortunately this period often occurs in the late afternoon or evening, when everyone else in the house is tired and wants peace. Sometimes the baby is pacified by cuddling or other comfort measures. If not, consider these suggestions.

  • Babies love motion: try a swing, rocker, front pack, or sling, or a walk in a stroller. You can even go for a ride in the car.

  • Play music, turn on the radio or television, or sing. The dishwasher, washing machine, clothes dryer, or vacuum cleaner may provide soothing noises.

  • Your baby may be bored; put her in the center of family activity. Keep in mind, however, that some babies get over stimulated and need quieter surroundings.

  • Wrap your infant snugly in a receiving blanket. Infants love the security this provides. It may remind them of the snug atmosphere of the mother`s womb.

  • Once breastfeeding is well established, try giving your baby a pacifier. The breast or bottle may not satisfy her need to suck. Wet the pacifier first in water.

  • Plan and prepare dinner ahead of time; eating will be a more relaxing time for everyone.
  • Some parents fear that showering too much attention on their newborn will spoil them. A newborn, however, cannot be spoiled. He needs attention, cuddling, and handling. Enjoying and responding to your baby is not spoiling him. A crying infant is in distress, he needs your support, your love to tide over the difficulties he may be facing. Do not think that your newborn infant is manipulating you when he cries for attention; he simply has no other form of expression. Initially, it will be difficult for you to figure out his needs, but your instincts and feelings will guide you. Practice will make you perfect.
