Medieval period in literature spans from A.D. 500 to late 15th century and was religious as well as secular in subject thus providing a vast range of study. Since it is so widespread the literature of this period is best characterised by its place of origin and or language as well as genre.
Languages
Latin was a common language for medieval writings since it was the language of the Church which dominated Western and Central Europe. However in eastern Europe the influence Eastern Roman Empire and Eastern orthodox church made Greek and Old church Slavonic the dominant written language.
Common people continued to use their respective vernaculars. A few examples such as Old English Beowulf, the Middle High German Nibelungenbrew, the Medieval Greek Digenus Acrctasand, the Old French Chanson de Roland are famous till date. Celtic tradition have survived in the lacs of Marinda France the Mabinogion and the Arthurian cycles. Medieval literature was largely anonymous and were oral stories developedover generations retold.
