Indian literature has contributed greatly to the society of its time and has played the role of spokesperson ,guide,teacher and critic at various points of the civilization. The ancient literature was largely didactic and aimed to teach the people the correct form of behaviour in society and the morals the society should adhere to. The ancient literature was accessible to the people in form of dramas enacted on various occasions and had a very strong impact on their minds. The dramas of Kalidasa entertained the audiences at the same time it had a message to impart.
Panini`s Ashtadhyayi became a standard for linguistics and phonetics.Chanakya`s Arthshastra is a treatise on economy that has proved to be timeless and is still considered to be an authority on Economics, Vatsyayan`s Kamasutra is still the undisputed treatise on the art of love making and has held the world in its throes. The dramas were enacted to impart the message as envisaged by the dramatist and his perception of what an ideal society should be.
